Mackerel fillet in olive oil. Mackerel (Scomber scombrus) is a schooling fish that lives in coastal waters. Mackerel are on average 30 to 50 cm long and can live up to 17 years. They eat plankton and fry from herring, cod or sprat. Mackerel are found in the coastal waters of North America, the North Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. Brown mackerel breeding grounds are in the Irish Sea and on the western edge of the Norwegian Channel.
